New York Restoration Project and Build It Green!NYC are giving away free trees in Queens on May 4, 2013!

Registration is currently closed, but small quantities of each tree will be available first come, first served. For more information about other tree giveaways please check our full calendar.



At least 5 trees of each of the species listed below will be available first come, first served.

Trees Description and Planting Requirements
Brown Turkey Fig (registration full)Ficus carica - a small; fruit tree, moderate to maintain, will be 15'-30' tall in 20 years. Should be planted in full sun and in soil that is loam; sand; acidic. In 10-20 years your tree will reach 15'-30' tall and 15'-30' wide.
Leonard Messel Magnolia (registration full) Magnolia loebneri - a small; ornamental tree, easy to maintain, will be 10-15' tall in 20 years. Should be planted in full sun; partial sun or partial shade and in soil that is clay; loam; sand; acidic. In 20-50 years your tree will reach 30'-40’ tall and 30'-35 wide.
Common Witchhazel (registration full) Hamamelis virginiana - a small; multi-stemmed tree, easy to maintain, will be 15' tall in 20 years. Should be planted in tree grows in part shade/part sun; shade; and full sun and in soil that is clay; loam; sand; slightly alkaline. In 10-20 years your tree will reach 15'-25' tall and 10'-20' wide.
Japanese Stewartia (registration full) Stewartia pseudocamellia - a medium; ornamental tree, easy to maintain, will be 10'-15' tall in 20 years. Should be planted in full sun; part shade/part sun; or shade and in soil that is acidic; loam; clay; sand. In 40-60 years your tree will reach 30'-40' tall and 20'-30' wide.


What will I have to agree to if I want a tree?

** In order to register for a tree, you must agree to all four statements below.
  • I will plant my tree in the ground and care for my tree according to NYRP guidelines.
  • I will plant my tree in the ground on property I have permission to plant on that is within the 5 boroughs of New York City.
  • I grant NYRP and Build It Green!NYC rights to take and use photos and videos of me and all parties that come to the event with me, including minors, without compensation.
  • The information I provide can be shared by NYRP with Build It Green!NYC for follow up about your tree and outreach.
